Professional Sports Medicine Treatments
Podiatrists, like Dr. Sommer, are expertly trained in sports medicine, specializing in the foot, ankle, and lower extremity. Their comprehensive training encompasses the entire anatomy and physiology of the body, with a focus on addressing issues that may arise in the feet, legs, hips, and lower back of athletes.
Foot and Ankle Conditions
Helping patients of all ages and activity level get back on their feet is our mission. Here are a few common conditions.
Heel Pain
Heel pain is common at Family Foot and Ankle Clinic, often resulting from prolonged standing on hard surfaces like cement floors. The battle between our not-flat feet and flat surfaces, mainly the ground, contributes to heel and arch pain. With 28 bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments working to absorb shock, inflexibility may lead to bruising and calluses. On the other hand, excessive flexibility can strain muscles and ligaments, causing conditions like Plantar Fasciitis, Tendonitis, and Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome. Understanding these factors is crucial for effective treatment.
Bunions
A "bunion" refers to an enlargement or prominence of the big toe joint inside the foot. The term comes from the French word for "turnip." Hereditary factors play a significant role in bunion development, linked to overall foot biomechanics and instability at the big toe joint. Wearing suitable shoes and using orthotics can stabilize the arch and aid in bunion treatment. Surgical correction, a routine outpatient procedure, is often recommended to reduce the deformity and enhance the function of the great toe.
Hammertoes
Hammertoes are toes with a contracted appearance due to joint issues. This bending leads to friction against shoes, causing discomfort and the formation of corns. Using "corn pads" is a temporary solution that doesn't address the underlying problem. Initial steps involve wearing suitable shoes and using padding to reduce pressure, but more permanent solutions may be necessary. Dr. Sommer performs outpatient surgical procedures, often under local anesthetic, to straighten the toe and alleviate the pressure causing the corn.
Toenail Disorders
Toenail problems vary, with the familiar "fungus toenail" caused by athlete's foot fungus being a common issue. Treating it is challenging, but recent oral anti-fungal medications have shown success. Dr. Sommer typically prescribes a three-month course, with final results visible after six to eight months. Severe nail deformities may necessitate permanent removal to prevent ongoing pain and infection.
Another common issue is ingrown toenails, where nail edges cut into the skin, causing infection. Dr. Sommer performs pain-free in-office procedures under local anesthesia to remove the ingrown nail edge. Future care involves trimming toenails straight across and avoiding overly short cuts.
Calluses
Distinct from a plantar wart, a callus results from excessive pressure on a small foot area, leading to hard material buildup. Trimming these calluses in the office is recommended, but self-attempt is dangerous. Dr. Sommer can provide custom padding or Orthotics to redistribute weight and alleviate pressure. When calluses persist and are unresponsive to care, surgical correction may be necessary. Dr. Sommer performs this outpatient procedure under local anesthesia.
Athletes Foot
Athlete's foot doesn't exclusively afflict athletes; anyone can be affected by this fungal infection. Caused by a variety of fungi, it's often effectively treated with topical anti-fungal creams. In cases of chronic or severe athlete's foot, oral anti-fungal medication may be required. An accurate diagnosis is crucial, as other skin issues can mimic athlete's foot. Dr. Sommer will provide follow-up care instructions to minimize the chances of recurrence, ensuring comprehensive treatment and lasting relief.
Tendonitis
The human foot comprises numerous tendons, and any of them can undergo inflammation due to strain or overuse. When engaging in a new sport or work activity, tendons may need time to adapt; failure to do so can lead to inflammation, swelling, and pain. Dr. Sommer offers tailored treatments, including rest, ice, compression, elevation, and anti-inflammatory medication. Precision is crucial as different tendons, such as the Achilles and the one on top of the big toe, require specific approaches to address inflammation effectively.
Flatfoot
While flatfoot might not bar you from military service, it can still pose issues. Generally, flat feet cause misalignment in foot and ankle joints, resulting in localized arthritis, muscle strain, and ligament issues. Dr. Sommer can provide essential foot support, recommend suitable footwear, and discuss specific stretching and strengthening exercises tailored to your feet.
Fractures
In your foot, comprising 28 bones, any can endure a fracture or break, typically from sudden trauma or short-term overuse, known as a "stress fracture" or "march fracture" among soldiers on long marches. The bone may crack without immediate awareness, becoming painful and swollen with continued activity. Diagnosing and treating this fracture is essential to alleviate pain and prevent prolonged discomfort. Dr. Sommer can guide you through the necessary steps for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
Ankle Sprain
Ankle sprains can be painful, ranging from mild discomfort to severe pain, swelling, and bruising, potentially involving fractures. Severe sprains always warrant medical care. Dr. Sommer examines and x-rays the ankle to assess the extent of injury. Depending on severity, he may prescribe an ankle brace or cast. Recovery is crucial for long-term ankle injury outcomes. Ligaments may stretch or rupture, requiring strengthening and range-of-motion exercises. Joints may lose sensory coordination, termed proprioception, which can be restored through strengthening and flexibility plans. Dr. Sommer guides you through a comprehensive recovery process.
